Spike Island 19

Spike Island 19

Michael Joseph Casey, he was arrested by the British in Fermoy, Cork in June 1920 for being up a telegraph pole with a set of wire cutters with others keeping eye on the military. It is thought that he was going to cut the wires before attacking the local RIC barracks so that they could not contact the military and request help.

Furthermore, we'd hear stories about him when he was imprisoned but could never verify them. The story goes that, once in prison, he collected the paraffin oil which was given by the prison guard for the lice in the inmates' beds and they collected enough to set the cell on fire and they overpowered the guards and escaped.

Not sure if this is true but there were riots on Spike about the time he was there and Hunger strikes.
